Prepared for the 4th of July?

Independence Day and the fireworks surrounding the holiday can be a stressful time for you and your pet.  Here are a few tips & helpful products to get you and your furry friends through what is usually a stressful holiday.

1. Keep all pets indoors during prime firework time.  This of course is the evening of the 4th but in our neighborhood, we also hear many fireworks going off the evenings prior to the big holiday.  We keep our dogs indoors anytime we hear a neighbor start to celebrate.

2. Create a safe, comforting place for your pet to chill out during the fireworks.  If your dog is already kennel-trained, this is a great place for them to relax.

3.  Distract your dog with a frozen Kong. Just as the Kong works wonders for easing separation anxiety, a super tasty frozen Kong can help distract your pet during the fireworks.  We recommend peanut butter, applesauce, cottage cheese or pureed pumpkin as great Kong fillings.  At our household, I usually layer several of these options so the dogs keep encountering a new and exciting flavor as they go to town on their Kongs.

4.  Use calming remedies for seriously stressed pets.  If the above tips aren't enough to keep your pet calm, we've got several great options for taking the next step.  We highly recommend the Thundershirt, which works like a baby's swaddling blanket by applying comforting pressure to your pet.  Animals' Apawthecary Tranquility Blend is another great option for calming your pet (cats & dogs!).  Tranquility Blend is an herbal remedy that includes proven herbs like Valerian root to calm and relax your pet.  Both of these products are fully stocked here at NoPo Paws!

We wish you a safe and happy 4th!
